Art Rise, Part of WE RISE 2021
In 2021, I served as co-director, along with my colleague Gloria Gerace, on Art Rise, part of the WE RISE initiative of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Art Rise was a series of temporary outdoor art installations from May 7 through May 31, 2021 that was produced in partnership with twelve cultural institutions, presenting newly commissioned work by artists and art collectives, involving almost 90 artists.
With twenty-one projects located in five neighborhoods centered around downtown Los Angeles, Art Rise made visible the power of art toward collective wellbeing and healing. From personal works to large communal projects, Art Rise installations were broad and diverse including paintings, videos, sculptures, murals, a theater performance, a mobile care truck, and an accompanying soundtrack.
